Role of Cyclobenzaprine:
Cyclobenzaprine is a medication that
is capable of treating spasms in muscles.
Spasms in muscles are usually caused
by strains and pulls in muscles. Rest
and physical therapy are usually recommended
along with this medication. Cyclobenzaprine is meant for relaxing
muscles, and it functions basically
on the basis of blocking nerve impulses.
It is used to rid you of pain, tenderness,
and restricted motion. The normal
period for which it is taken is around
3 weeks.
Technically, Cyclobenzaprine relieves
skeletal; muscles from spasms, as
it sets to work on the area from where
spasm originates. In view of this,
it must be emphasized tat Cyclobenzaprine
only is effective when it works on
spasms caused by physical strains
and the like; it cannot work effectively
on spasms that are related to the
central nervous system. It does not
work on the neuromuscular junction,
which means that it cannot act directly
on the skeletal muscles.
Side Effects of Cyclobenzaprine:
It is not easy to determine
what types of side effects you will
suffer. You may suffer with any of
the following:
• abnormal sensations,
• dreams,
• agitation,
• blurred vision,
• convulsions,
• decreased appetite, increased
heart rate, indigestion,
• inflammation of the stomach,
• lack of coordination,
• palpitations,
• stomach and intestinal pain,
• swelling of the tongue or
face,
• paranoia,
• weakness,
• yellow eyes and skin.
Precautions:
Pregnant women are not advised to
use Cyclobenzaprine. If you are pregnant
you should talk to your doctor first
before using Cyclobenzaprine. As far
as breast feeding is concerned you
must note that the Cyclobenzaprine
passes on into the milk your child
consumes. Therefore, it is suggested
that breast feeding mothers should
not consume Cyclobenzaprine.
Cyclobenzaprine is known to react
with alcohol and other medications.
You are advised not to consume antidepressants
along with Cyclobenzaprine, as fatal
reactions are likely to occur. You
should not consume anti depressants,
especially those that contain MAO
inhibitors: Nardil and Parnate. You
are also advised against using Cyclobenzaprine
within two weeks of being under antidepressants.
You need to wait at least 2 weeks
before you can use Cyclobenzaprine.
You should also tell your doctor if
you have been using barbiturates like
phenobarbital Guanethidine that are
used for controlling your blood pressure.
These slow down the central nervous
system, and Halcion and Xanax Tramadol
(Ultram) are examples.
You should follow your doctor’s
instructions strictly. You should
never take more than you are supposed
do take according to your recommended
dosage. If you happen to miss out
on a dose, never try to make up for
it. Just forget it, and move to the
next dose.
