Ingredients
Bontril is a sympathomimetic amine,
which is similar to an amphetamine.
Regarding its chemical composition,
Bontril contains Phendimetrazine tartrate,
as the dextro isomer, which has the
chemical name of 3, 4-Dimethyl-2-phenylmorpholine
Tartrate. Phendimetrazine tartrate
is a white, odorless powder having
a bitter taste.
It is soluble in water, methanol
and ethanol. Because of its apetite
suppressing quality it has been assigned
various other names for example anorexiogenic.
It stimulates the central nervous
system (nerves and brain), which increases
the heart rate and blood pressure
and decreases the appetite. Bontril
stimulates the satiety (feeling of
fullness) centre in the hypothalamic
region of the brain and also in the
limbic regions which is the area of
brain related to emotional wellbeing.
The active drug 105 mg of phendimetrazine
tartrate in each capsule of this special
slow-release dosage form approximates
the action of three 35 mg non-time
release doses taken at 4 hours intervals.
Chemistry
Bontril may cause dizziness, blurred
vision, or restlessness, and it may
hide the symptoms of extreme tiredness.
If one experiences these effects,
hazardous activities should be avoided.
Bontril is habit forming. It causes
physical and psychological dependence
and withdrawal effects if stopped
taking it suddenly after several weeks
of continuous use. It should be stopped
gradually in consultation with a doctor.
Contraindications include heart disease
or high blood pressure; arteriosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries); glaucoma;
taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
(MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine
or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last
14 days; or a history of drug or alcohol
abuse and moderate to severe hypertension..
Full personal history or medical profile
should be provided to the doctor before
taking this medication, for example
any problems with thyroid, an anxiety
disorder, epilepsy or another seizure
disorder, or diabetes. These conditions
limit the intake of Bontril, or necessitate
a lower dose or special monitoring
during treatment for any of these
conditions.
Dosage
Bontril is best taken on an empty
stomach one hour before meals. Sustained-release
or long acting products must be swallowed
whole. Crushing or chewing them will
destroy the long action and may cause
increased side effects.It should not
be taken longer than directed. It
is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks.
Use in combination with other appetite
suppressant medicine is generally
not recommended.
Dose of bontril should not be exceeded
and is taken exactly as directed by
the doctor. Help can be taken from
a pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to
understand the directions of use of
the drug. Each dose is taken with
a full glass of water. Bontril is
usually taken once a day (sustained
release formula) or two to three times
daily (immediate-release formula)
before meals on an empty stomach.
Use is avoided in the evening because
it may cause insomnia. Phendimetrazine
tartrate is not recommended for use
in children under 12 years of age.
It is swallowed as a whole. Too much
Bontril could be very dangerous to
health. It is stored at room temperature
away from moisture and heat.
An
overdose of bontril is a medical emergency
and medical attention should be sought
immediately. |
