Celexa is a medication that
helps one to get relief from
depression. The main ingredient
of this medication is Citalopram
HBr; this is a powder which
comes in two colors, either
in fine white or off white.
It is to some extent soluble
in water, but it is soluble
in ethanol. Citalopram belongs
to a family of medicines that
are known as SSRI’S (Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).
The medication is thought to
work on the principle of increasing
the activity of Serotonin present
in the brain. Celexa comes in
tablets and an oral solution;
both of their main ingredients
are given below.
Celexa 10 mg
• Copolyvidone, Corn
Starch, Crosscarmellose Sodium,
Glycerin, Lactose Monohydrate,
Magnesium Stearate, Hypromellose,
Microcrystalline Cellulose,
Polyethylene Glycol, and Titanium
Dioxide.
• Iron oxides (comes
only in 10 mg and pink 20 mg
tablets.)
Celexa oral solution
• Sorbitol, Purified
Water, Propylene Glycol, Methylparaben,
Natural peppermint flavor, and
Propylparaben.
The oral solution contains
approximately to 2 mg/mL of
citalopram HBr in it.
Chemistry
The medication is not suitable
for children; according to clinical
studies that were done on children,
thoughts of committing suicide
or even attempting to commit
suicide has been observed. Celexa
is not meant for women who are
pregnant as the main ingredient
passes through breast milk and
can cause effects such as drowsiness,
decreased feeding & weight
loss.
You need to inform your doctor
of the following diseases which
could be fatal if Celexa is
taken while having: Seizure
disorders, Heart attacks (recent),
Liver diseases, Heart diseases,
Kidney diseases, or a History
of Mania; etc.
Dosage
The dosage for Celexa will
differ from person to person;
this will depend on his or her
medical history or current medical
condition. Before you can take
Celexa it is advisable to let
your doctor know that you intend
on using it. She or he will
be the best judge of whether
the medication is right and
how much of the medication you
will need to take per day.
The common dosage that is given
to an individual is normally
20 mg of Celexa in a day, which
can be taken either in the morning
or in the evening. The medication
can be increased slowly by your
doctor. The dosage does not
exceed more than 60mg a day.
The dosage in old people starts
at 20mg a day, but the dosage
never exceeds more than 40mg
a day. For children, the dosage
should be given as advised by
the doctor.
You should speak to the doctor
about missed dosages and you
will be advised on what you
should do in such cases.
