in Famvir
The medication Famvir is an antiviral
drug used in the treatment of herpes
zoster which is commonly known as
a skin infection. It is also used
to treat recurrent outbreaks of genital
herpes, as well as shingles. It is
important to note here that this drug
does not cure shingles, herpes zoster
or genital herpes; it only quickens
the healing process.
The medication Famvir contains Famciclovir
as its main active ingredient. Famciclovir
is a white to pale yellow solid which
is soluble in acetone and methanol
and is sparingly soluble in ethanol
and isopropanol. This medication is
available in tablet form in the 125mg
and the 250mg tablets that are round,
while the 500mg tablets are oval.
Some
other ingredients present in Famvir
include:
• hydroxypropyl methylcellulose
• lactose
• magnesium stearate
• polyethylene glycols
• sodium starch glycolate
• titanium dioxide
• hydroxypropyl cellulose
Chemistry
of Famvir
This medication should be used with
caution as it can interact with other
drugs and can cause adverse effects.
If you are taking any OTC (over the
counter) drugs, consult with your
doctor before you can take Famvir.
It is not known whether Famvir is
passed through breast milk. However,
it is best to consult your doctor
on this issue if you are breast feeding.
If you get pregnant while on Famvir
contact your doctor immediately. It
is especially important to check with
your doctor before using Famvir with
probenecid (Benemid). If you suffer
form any kidney problems, it is best
to avoid the medication as it may
increase the chances of side effects.
Precautions
while using Famvir
Famvir should be stored at a cool
and dry place. Avoid the exposure
of the drug to heat and sunlight.
If the side effects of Famvir do not
improve within a few days, it is suggested
that you check with your doctor right
away. The area infected with herpes
should be kept clean and dry at all
times. Clothes that are worn should
be loose so that the irritation is
lessened.
Dosage
of Famvir
The amount of Famvir should be prescribed
by your doctor only. If you are taking
the medication without the consultation
of a doctor, you are advised to read
the leaflet that comes along with
the medication carefully. The dosages
that are prescribed will differ for
each individual, and will depend on
the medical conditions that you in.
The normal dosage that is given to
people for the treatment of shingles
is one tablet (500mg). This is taken
on a ‘per week basis’.
For the treatment of genital herpes,
250mg of Famvir is taken twice a day
for a period of 365 days. For the
treatment of genital herpes that is
recurrent, two 125mg tablets are taken
for 5 days.
In case you miss a dose of this drug,
and it is almost time for your next
dose, the missed dose should be skipped.
Do not take two doses or an extra
dose of this drug. |
