Fluoxetine is an ingredient
is present in products such
as Prozac, Prozac Weekly &
Sarafem. When present in these
products, it is the main ingredient
and is known by the name of
Fluoxetine hydrochloride. The
ingredient is known to cure
people who are suffering from
depression.
It is also further used to
cure obsessive-compulsive disorder,
bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual
dysphonic disorder. The main
inactive ingredients present
in these pills are: starch,
gelatin, silicone, titanium
dioxide, iron dioxide, and other
inactive ingredients.
Fluoxetine hydrochloride comes
in a white to off white crystalline
solid with a solubility of 14
mg/ml in water. This ingredient
can also be presented as a solution,
and when presented in this form,
it is known to have the following
inactive ingredients: alcohol
0.23%, benzoic acid, flavoring
agent, glycerin, purified water,
and sucrose.
Fluoxetine belongs to the group
of medicines called selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors
(SSRIs). They are thought to
work on the principle of increasing
the chemical activity called
serotonin in the brain.
Chemistry
Fluoxetine has been tested
in a limited number of individuals
in the age bracket of seven
to eighteen. However, symptoms
such as unusual excitement,
trouble in sleeping, irritability
and restlessness has been observed
in them. When giving Fluoxetine
influenced medicines to children,
it must be used with caution
and under constant monitoring.
Further, studies have shown
that children who have been
using medication with Fluoxetine
in it have shown signs of thinking
about suicide and attempts of
committing suicide have been
observed in clinical trials.
The medicine should be taken
under the prescription of a
doctor. It is further advised
that before taking these drugs
your doctor should be fully
aware of what medical conditions
you are going through or have
been on. It is also important
that you keep your doctor informed
about what medication you have
been taking or are taking under
those conditions.

following: Alprazolam, Anticoagulants,
Digitalis glycosides, Astemizole,
Bromocriptine, Dextromethorphan,
Levodopa, Lithium, Meperidine,
Nefazodone, Pentazocine, etc.
Dosage
The dosage will be different
to everyone as it will be dependant
on the medical conditions and
the current medications that
you are having. While having
medicines you should follow
the instructions on the leaflet
or what the doctor has ordered.
The conditions will also further
depend on how long Fluoxetine
related products should be taken
and after what intervals should
the medicines be taken at.
In the light of a missed dose,
it is not important that you
make up for the missed dose.
Skip the dose and continue you
with the regular dose.
