Ingredients
Meridia is an appetite suppressant
that is only administered by
a doctor. MERIDIA® is available
in tablets. The active ingredient
in these tables is a racemes
mixture of the (+) and (-) enantiomers
of cyclobutanemethanamine, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-N,N-dimethyl-a-(2-methylpropyl)-,
hydrochloride, monohydrate,
and has an empirical formula
of C17H29Cl2NO.
MERIDIA® comes in three
different types’ it is
dependent on how much of the
main ingredient is there in
each tablet. The main ingredient
is called Sibutramine Hydrochloride.
It also has other ingredients
that are inactive such as the
ones that are listed below.
• Lactose Monohydrate,
NF;
• Microcrystalline cellulose,
NF;
• Colloidal silicon dioxide,
NF; and
• Magnesium Stearate,
• Titanium Dioxide,
• USP;
• gelatin; FD&C Blue
No. 2 (5- and 10-mg capsules
only);
• D&C Yellow No. 10
(5- and 15-mg capsules only)
Chemistry
There are some precautionary
measures that should be taken
care of while having this medication.
Since this is a pill that is
meant to suppress appetite it
could have adverse effects if
taken with other medications.
If one is taking medications
or undergoing treatment such
as high blood pressure, emotion
problems, diseases that is related
to the heart or glaucoma etc.
If you are taking medicines
for the cure of cough and cold
it should be noted that many
of them contain the ingredients
called antihistamines and decongestants.
If you are using MAO inhibitors,
it should not be taken while
using MERIDIA.
While having MERIDIA the consumption
of alcohol should be avoided.
Older people should use MERIDIA
with more caution as the chances
of having side effects are more
apparent with them. If you are
pregnant or nursing a child
the medication should be stopped,
the reason being that it could
harm the nursing child.
Dosage
The dosage of MERIDIA is prescribed
by the doctor and should be
taken exactly as directed. The
medication is taken orally i.e.
via the mouth with a glass of
water. You may not see significant
changes, do not double the dosage
or stop it completely, seek
medical help and follow the
doctor’s advice. In the
event of you putting on more
weight please refer to you physician
for further advice.
MERIDIA is prescribed to you
by your doctor only for you.
It should never be suggested
to anyone else or shared. It
should also not be used in substitution
to your low calorie diet. The
doctor may want to have regular
tests done so that you are constantly
monitored for any signs of side
effect that may occur.
If a missed dose occurs it
should be taken as soon as you
have remembered, but if the
next dosage is not far away
simply skip it and continue
on with the next dose.
